Magic of today, Science of tomorrow
Technology has taken leaps and bounds over the centuries. From the Abacus to today's PC or Phone, the Silicone Age is upon us.
Let us learn what advancements have taken place over the last century itself. Today in 1923:
lets take a moment to think about this. Prior to 1/1/1923 if you had diabetes, it was pretty much a death sentence and Helicopters just did not exist prior to 1939 (oh how would that have effected WWII ).
Let us learn what advancements have taken place over the last century itself. Today in 1923:
The first successful flight of an autogyro, the predecessor to a helicopter, takes place.
Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva conducts the first successful flight of his invention, the autogyro, in January . The autogyro was a rotary wing aircraft that became the predecessor to the helicopter. Cierva previously made several versions of his autogyro that had not been successful, but the design he figured out the correct balance and the aircraft flew in a controlled and safe manner.
Insulin is introduced for treatment of Diabetes.
German medical student Raul Langerhans discovers cell clusters with unknown functions in pancreatic tissues in 1869.
Oskar Minkowski, a physiologist, and Joseph von Mering, a physician experiment with pancreatic functions in dogs in 1889. There are able to figure out two functions of the pancreas, the production of digestive juices and the production of a sugar glucose regulator.
Romanian professor Nicolae Paulescu develops a pancreatic extract that normalizes blood sugar levels in a diabetic dog in 1916, but his work is interrupted by World War I.
Dr. Frederick Banting gets the idea to create a pancreatic extract that would have anti-diabetic attributes in 1920. Banting teams up with Professor John Macleod, student Charles Best, and biochemist Bertram Collip at the University of Toronto in 1921 and they begin a series of studies that lead to the discovery of insulin. By late 1922 and early 1923, the Eli Lilly Company makes a breakthrough in the mass production of highly refined insulin and offers it for sale to the public to treat diabetes, a disorder that had been previously thought of as fatal.
lets take a moment to think about this. Prior to 1/1/1923 if you had diabetes, it was pretty much a death sentence and Helicopters just did not exist prior to 1939 (oh how would that have effected WWII ).

AMERICAN RADIO AMATEUR HEARD ACROSS PACIFIC
27/01/1923
The first signals from an American amateur radio station have crossed the Pacific. A radio operator on board a ship only 120 miles off the coast of China has reported to the American Radio Relay League that he picked up the signals of Several members of that organization.
This achievement reinforces the successful trans-Atlantic radio tests in which 316 American amateur stations were heard in England. These are steps toward the amateur radio communication around the world.

United States - Warner Brothers Established
The Warner Brothers established their film studio company during April (1923). The brothers Albert, Samuel, Jack, and Harry had previously worked together after founding the Duquesne Amusment & Supply Company in Pittsburgh in 1904. By the 1910s they had transitioned to film production and distribution. With a loan from banker Motley Flint, the studio was purchased on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California and formally incorporated as Warner Brothers Pictures, Incorporated.

To catch us up to 1924, technological advancements from 1923 incude:
- Garrett A. Morgan invents a traffic signal.
- The television or iconoscope (cathode-ray tube) invented by Vladimir Kosma Zworykin.
- John Harwood invented the self-winding watch.
- Clarence Birdseye invents frozen food.
Moving into 1924, The Earth inductor compass (or simply induction compass) was developed and refined by Morris Titterington at the Pioneer Instrument Company in Brooklyn, New York. Designed to compensate for the weaknesses of the magnetic compass, the Earth inductor compass provided pilots with a more stable and reliable reference instrument.
