Battle Beasts
-In the Beging......
For those of you who don't remember these guys the Battle Beasts was a series of mini action figures from Hasbro from 1987. Each of these creatures was basically a humanoid version of an animal from the wild kingdom with a weapon and a heat sensitive icon on their chest that indicated a special elemental power (Wood, Fire or Water.)
- Spoiler:
Thing is Battle Beasts were known as Beastformers in Japan and had actually appeared on the Japanese version of the Transformers cartoon in the 80's. I didnt figure this out, till i watched the Headmaster series
- Spoiler:
The fight took place on Planet Beast, and if you look in Dreamwave's 20th Anniversary Transformers Summer Special - Megatron tracks the Predacons down to none other than Planet Beast!
ASLO - Scourge (Flame Convoy) of TFC is ruler of Planet Beast
-although for some reason, the little creatures are no where to be found
**ps
-I loved these things.....almost had ALL of them and there was A LOT of them to get--
if you want Battle Beast repo/custom toys - http://godbeast.com/ - is a VERY good place to start

Re: Battle Beasts
So apparently there was a Battle Beasts comic made in 2012 by IDW - http://battlebeasts.blogspot.com/2012/04/press-release-dump-diamond-select-toys.html:
-----------------
on the flip side, managed to pick up a few of the figures I had when i was younger for the kiddos and I:
The mini-series is written by Bobby Curnow (Godzilla Legends, Night of 1000 Wolves) and penciled by Valerio Schiti (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Donatello, Dungeons & Dragons: Eberron). It focuses on a group of renegade Beasts who return to Earth to protect the ultimate weapon (and the human who activated it) from an armada of their violent brethren.

After three decades of nothing, new toys of Beastformers characters were released in Takara's Transformers Legends toyline, as the Headmaster partners to the new Monsterbot toys. These molds were originally designed for Hasbro's Titans Return line, and while the small robots were modeled after the Beastformers characters, Hasbro chose to give them different names, treating them as Cybertronians who just happened to look that way. Takara, however, took the last step and directly named them after their sculpt inspirations, and made it very explicit that they were the same characters in the attached pack-in/online manga, and made some other toys out to be new forms for Beastformers characters as well.

Re: Battle Beasts
Laser Beasts
"After the first three waves of Battle Beasts figures, totaling 76 unique Beasts, the line was all but done in the West. Japan continued production by adding a further 36 "Laser Beasts". The first 12 of these were sparsely released in some Hasbro markets as "Shadow Beasts". These figures featured a plastic lens or 'orb' in the chest which magnified the image of an element on a transparency that received light from a hole in the figure's back. The Shadow Beasts also included a stylized rifle weapon instead of a medieval melee weapon. These rifles feature motifs of the type of animal wielding it, such as wings, heads, or fins.
In total 36 Laser Beasts have been released, but only within Japan. The figures became available in three waves and to describe the release and their rareness it is best to cut the 36 figures in 3 parts knowing the lower 12 (#77 – #88), the middle 12 (#89 – #100) and the so called 12 high end figures (#101 – #112). The lower 12 were the most widespread of this line because outside Japan they were available in North America and a few European countries. France was the only other country in the world to welcome the middle 12 figures. Remains only the last 12 figures which can be seen as the Japanese exclusives knowing they were only available in their land of origin, Japan. It is clear that even though Hasbro planned a much wider distribution for the Shadow Warriors worldwide it never happened. This is the reason why these figures are much less known or not even known at all in some countries where the Battle Beasts were released."

while researching this topic, i had stumbled upon the comic mini-series that IDW launched in 2012. in combination with the mini-series a set of new figures were released by Minimates.
"A Diamond Select Toys Release! Designed and Sculpted by Art Asylum! From the mind of Art Asylum and the pages of the IDW comic book comes an all-new series of Battle Beasts Minimates! This new assortment of two-inch warrior animals includes eight new beasts only available on the specialty market. Each Minimate stands 2 inches tall with 14 points of articulation and features a variety of removable and interchangeable parts and accessories. Create your own animal combinations!"
- Spoiler:
-----------------
while these figures certainly look like what they look like in the Battle Beasts comic series, the figures don't "feel" like those of the '80s or even those from the Beast Saga line. maybe its just me, but not incorporating the fire/water/wood (land/sea/sky) aspect (like at all), takes away from what gave the original figures their uniqueness from an otherwise sea of anthropomorphic action figures.
