Beowulf
Post production underway by director Robert Zemeckis on movie based on classic, epic poem about a young warrior who must fight a monster named Grendal. Neil Gaiman cowrote the screenplay. Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich and Robin Wright Penn star. Paramount Pictures releasing the film on Nov. 21, 2007.
Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary, who wrote the script of the upcoming 3-D animated Beowulf movie, said that they enhanced the original Old English epic poem with some creative interpolation. In part, that means including a scene in which the naked mother of Grendel, who looks a lot like voice actor Angelina Jolie, seduces a near-naked Beowulf, voiced by Ray Winstone—a scene that definitely does not take place in the original poem.
"We had our theory," Gaiman (Sandman, Stardust) said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 27. "Our theory was that, at any point when the poem tells you what happened, it's telling you the truth. But at any point when anybody in the poem goes off stage and then comes back on and says, 'While I was in the other room, this is what happened,' they could be lying."
In the poem, the Viking hero, Beowulf, goes after the mother of the monster Grendel, whom he has already slain. "He disappears for eight days, comes back looking quite exhausted with Grendel's head, but not [that of Grendel's mother]. ... And we just thought, ... 'He is rather unreliable here,'" Gaiman said. Given that, it was a short step to reimagining what might actually have taken place, he said.
"We had enormous fun doing that and still trying to play fair, as if it were some peculiar game that we were going to be playing with English professors all around the world for the rest of time," Gaiman added.
