not long after Next Gen ends in the timeline, a star explodes or something and in its path of destruction is Romulis, Spock, or "Spock Prime" as he's called, promises them he will save them, but the flair was faster then they had figured on and it wiped out the planet before Spock and his red matter could save them, Red Matter is apparently this awesome super compound that afew drops of can stop a solar flair or any other powerful thing of that nature. Spock tosses the red matter in so he can atleast stop the flair thingy, but it causes a black whole, he's confronted in space by the last romulian ship in existance, a mining ship captained by a man named Nero. they are literally the last of their kind, they get sucked through the black hole and get sent to the past, where they end up in the fight I mention at the begining, which kills Kirk's dad, thus completely changing the timeline.

Everything that happend to Kirk, happened to Spock, he was the one that grew in privilage and stuff, Kirk has to work for it all. And the former captain they're talking about is Admirial Pike, who if you remember, was the captain of the enterprise in the original pilot of original series.
